My Pre-Race Elixir Drink

by: Lindsay Webster

What is “a little bit better?” T-bone or fillet mignon, Mozart instead of Sean Paul (sorry, Sean fans!)? As an athlete, “a little bit better” can make the difference between a podium finish or just missing the mark. When you’re in competitive sports, the field is full of talented athletes who are constantly striving to be the best they can be, and BeetElite helps to give me that extra edge during my races and training.

Before every race, I make my pre-race elixir. It’s concocted of ingredients packed full of health benefits, the base ingredient being BeetElite. Don’t let the fact that it’s super healthy scare you off; it’s actually delicious! Of course, you don’t have to be an athlete to drink it. The ingredients in this juice have benefits that everyone’s body will gratefully absorb. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 pack of BeetElite, or 2 rounded teaspoons of SuperBeets powder
  • ½ lemon
  • 1 orange
  • 2 large carrots
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric

It doesn’t sound like many ingredients, it’s true. However, one pack of BeetElite is the equivalent of eating six beets! Beets are packed with nitric oxide and antioxidants, high in immune-boosting vitamin C, and may help lower your blood pressure…you name it, and if it’s good for you, beets do it! They are referred to as one of “the world’s healthiest foods.” Athletes love these root vegetables because the high nitric oxide content in them is a powerful vasodilator. In short, they assist in increasing blood flow to the muscles, which makes it easier for your mitochondria (our power-generators) to produce energy. Beets give us a boost in stamina, and may help fight inflammation.

Speaking of fighting inflammation, that’s where the turmeric comes in. Turmeric has forever been used in Chinese and Indian medicine for it’s anti-inflammatory benefits, which obviously is great for muscles before and after a race, or if you’re just prone to post-workout inflammation.

Again, like beets, oranges and lemons both have tons of vitamin C, and no one wants to catch a cold before a race! Vitamin C helps the body to ward off any unwanted bugs. Last but not least, all these ingredients have tons of potassium, which is one of the bodies key ingredients to assist in absorbing all the other vitamins and minerals it needs. Making the juice itself is easy.

I’m lucky enough to own a juicer, so I simply dump my pack of BeetElite and the turmeric into the juicing reservoir, and juice the rest of the ingredients. Mix them all together, and voila! If you don’t own a juicer, I’ve also tried using a blender. Pour your pack of BeetElite and the turmeric into the blender, then squeeze the juice from the orange and lemon in with the powders. Then I chop up my carrots into small pieces, and blend it all together. Of course, using this method, you end up with a more smoothie-like consistency from all the shredded carrot, but it still tastes great!

I typically double this recipe, and drink a glass of this juice the day before my race, the morning of my race, and of course consume my trusty pack of BeetElite mixed in water 15-minutes before the start gun sounds. But again, you don’t have to be an athlete for your body to appreciate the health benefits of this drink. The body does a lot for us each and every day, so let’s thank it! And if it tastes yummy, then why the heck not?
